Australia IP Report 2021: New Administration, New Developments?

The Australian government just released its 2021 IP report. This research offers a highly detailed look at the current state of the nation. The headlines of the statistics for patents, trademarks, and designs are provided below.

Patents

More than 32,000 patent applications were filed in Australia. 90 percent of the applications came from abroad, primarily from the UK, USA, China, and Japan.

In the top 5 filers. From Huawei and Oppo. LG, Nestle, and Apple were the other top three filers. Pharmaceuticals, medical technology, biotechnology, organic fine chemistry, and computer technologies rounded out the top five industries for patent applications.

Trademarks

In 2021, Australia received around 88000 trademark applications. Direct national applications made about 78% of these submissions. Locals submitted 60% of the applications. Class 9 (electrical devices), Class 25 (clothing), Class 35 (advertising), Class 41 (education), and Class 42 were the top five classes seeking trademark protection (scientific services).

The top five applicants were Philip Morris, Apple, Novartis, Samsung, and Glaxo. Aristocrat Technologies, Endeavour, Coles, Aldi, and Southcorp rounded up the top five local companies.

Designs

More than 8100 design proposals were submitted to Australia. International businesses filed about 68 percent of the documents. Philips, Xiaomi, Apple, Aussie Union Group Hong Kong, and Fisher & Paykel Healthcare make up the top 5. Zimmermann Wear, Phoenix Industries, Vuly Property, Frankie4, and With Jean make up the top five local businesses.

The statistics demonstrate that Australian IP is increasing in comparison to past years. In terms of industries, COVID is also evident in the trademarks for scientific services and medicinal applications.

The figures offer a strong foundation from which to expand. We’ll find out in the future if Albanese’s New Labor administration fights climate change and employs intellectual property as a weapon. Let’s watch the IP reports over the upcoming years to determine if this transformation takes place or not.
