Geographical indication registration for kampong shrimp in Cambodia
The Ministry of Commerce of Cambodia will register “Kampong Som Dried Shrimp” from coastal provinces as a national geographical product in order to promote Cambodian culture, traditions, and customs.
According to Soun Vichea, head of the Secretariat of the National Committee for Intellectual Property and Director of Intellectual Property at the Ministry of Commerce, the working team held a workshop in the Preah Sihanoukville province to identify suitable products for developing the brand name “Kampong Som Dried Shrimp.” Representatives from the Ministries of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries, as well as traders and producers of dried shrimp from Preah Sihanoukville province, attended the session.
Dried shrimp is one of the products that the ministry hopes to register as a national geographical indication product, according to Vichea. To promote Cambodian culture, traditions, and customs, the Ministry of Commerce intends to register the “Kampong Som Dried Shrimp” from coastal regions as a national geographical product.
“The Ministry of Commerce has sought the help of development partners to study the possibility of registering a geographical brand or collective brand in the fisheries sector, including ‘Kampong Som Dried Shrimp, Koh Kong Dried Shrimp and Siem Reap Fish Prahok’, which are Cambodian fishery products,” Vichea said.
Vichea commended UNIDO and all stakeholders for their efforts in researching and promoting fishery products in Cambodia in order to prepare for the registration of protected goods as geographical indication brands.
At the moment, Cambodia currently has a few potential geographical indication products, including Kampot pepper, Kampong Speu palm sugar, Koh Trong pomelo, and Mondulkiri wild honey.
Furthermore, the Ministry of Commerce’s Department of Intellectual Property has registered the collective brands ‘Kuy Teav Phnom Penh,’ ‘Ambok Kampong Thom,’ and ‘Preah Vihear Rice.’
“These geographical indicators and collective brand products are not only highly valued in the domestic and foreign markets, but they have become a part of promoting the tourism potential and history of Cambodia as well as promoting the culture, traditions and customs of the Cambodian people on the international stage,” Vichea said.
In addition, other products that the ministry intends to register as geographical indications are ‘Kampot Salt and Kampot Flower of Salt,’ ‘Kampot Fish Sauce,’ and ‘Takeo Lobster.’
