32 million Chinese trademarks have been added to the online database of TMview

The EUIPO and the China National IP Administration (CNIPA) have announced that Chinese trademark data is now available in TMview. As a result of the change, the free database now has access to an extra 32 million trademark records.

TMview allows users to search trademark records from all EU national IP offices, the EUIPO, and a number of foreign partner offices across the world, providing data on the kind of right and application, the registration date, and the goods or services covered.

The news comes after the parties signed a Agreement on the Exchange of Trademark Information in September 2020, as well as a period of technical cooperation between the EU and Chinese IP offices. IP Key China, an EU-funded programme that promotes IP rights in China through collaboration with local authorities, aided the inclusion of Chinese trademarks in TMview, according to the EUIPO.

Shen Changyu, the commissioner of the CNIPA, and Christian Archambeau, the executive director of the EUIPO, met virtually to commemorate the occasion and state that: “The go-live of Chinese trademark data in the TMview database is a tribute to the mutually beneficial cooperation between China and Europe in general, and more specifically between the China National Intellectual Property Administration and the European Union Intellectual Property Office.

This is a welcome step forward in the efficiency and transparency of the global trademark system since about 32 million Chinese trademarks are now accessible for a free, multi-lingual search via the Internet. This will help Chinese and European businesses, of all sizes, including the small and medium-sized enterprises who are increasingly tackling global markets.”

The online database of TMview

Since its first release in April 2010, TMview has undergone a number of improvements and overhauls, as well as a considerable increase of the data it provides. The EUIPO published a test version of the site late last year to get input from the public. A ‘contains’ option for finding trademark denominations, improved definitions of Nice and Vienna classes, dynamic filers, and statistical data were among the new features.

TMview and Designview, which use blockchain to securely transmit real-time IP rights information, inaugurated the first European blockchain platform in April 2021. The office explained: “Blockchain improves speed while maintaining high-quality data transfers. Data integrity and security is taken to another level, thus opening the door to new services that will improve connectivity between users and their IP rights, and which will speed up inter-IP office procedures.”

The addition of Chinese records, on the other hand, has long been considered as the database’s Holy Grail. For several years, efforts have been made to incorporate these into the platform.

With over 62 million trademarks from 74 member IP offices, TMview was already the world’s biggest free trademark database. It has made tremendous progress in recent years, providing access to Chinese data that was previously unavailable and difficult to get. As a result, there are currently over 90 million trademark records available.
