China’s Patent-Intensive Industries Witness Phenomenal Growth: Added Value Soars to 15 Trillion Yuan in 2022
China’s commitment to fostering innovation and nurturing patent-intensive industries has yielded remarkable results, with the added value of these sectors reaching 15.3176 trillion yuan in 2022. This figure represents a notable 7.1 percent increase compared to the previous year, underscoring the nation’s steadfast dedication to driving economic growth through innovation. The latest statistics, released jointly by the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) and the National Bureau of Statistics, shed light on the pivotal role of patent-intensive industries in propelling China’s economic advancement.
The significant contribution of patent-intensive industries to China’s GDP is evident, with their share rising to 12.71 percent in 2022, marking a 0.27 percent increase from the previous year. This uptick underscores the growing importance of innovation-driven sectors in shaping the nation’s economic landscape and driving sustainable development.
Breaking down the data further reveals the dominance of certain key industries within the patent-intensive sector. The new equipment manufacturing industry emerged as the frontrunner, generating an impressive added value of 4.1643 trillion yuan, constituting 27.2 percent of the total added value in patent-intensive industries. Following closely is the information and communication technology (ICT) services industry, contributing 3.3888 trillion yuan and accounting for 22.1 percent of the total. Additionally, the ICT manufacturing industry demonstrated robust performance, with an added value of 3.1818 trillion yuan, representing 20.8 percent of the overall figure.
In terms of growth rates, the new materials manufacturing industry emerged as a standout performer, showcasing an impressive growth rate of 12.8 percent. Close behind is the ICT manufacturing industry, which experienced a growth rate of 11.5 percent. Furthermore, both the ICT services industry and the new equipment manufacturing industry demonstrated substantial growth, with growth rates of 10.6 percent and 8.3 percent, respectively.
Despite the overall positive trajectory, the pharmaceutical and medical industry experienced a decline of 16.8 percent in 2022. However, this decline can be attributed to an exceptionally high baseline in 2021 rather than underlying structural issues. When considering a two-year average growth rate in comparison to 2020, the pharmaceutical and medical industry maintained positive momentum, registering an 8.3 percent increase.
In conclusion, China’s patent-intensive industries have emerged as key drivers of economic growth, contributing significantly to GDP. The impressive performance of sectors such as new equipment manufacturing and ICT underscores China’s transition towards a knowledge-based economy. As the nation continues to prioritize innovation and intellectual property protection, the outlook for patent-intensive industries remains promising, promising sustained growth and prosperity for years to come.
