The 1st Philippine International Copyright Summit begins on the week of November 22, 2021

The 1st Philippine International Copyright Summit (PICS), hosted by the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) will be held on the week of November 22, 2021. The Summit will bring together 50 local and international speakers to join hands and debate about the latest trends and challenges in copyright regulations and enforcement which include restraining infringement activities in the country and assisting creators in achieving more comprehensive control over their copyright and related rights.

The Bureau of Copyright and Related Rights (BCRR) in celebration of the 24th anniversary of the passing into law of Republic Act 8293 had its official press launch of the 1st Philippine International Copyright (PICS) Summit on 7 June 2021, 10:00 AM – 11:30 AM and had the official launching on 22 to 26 November 2021, 10:00 AM – 04:00 PM (Philippine Standard Time) via Zoom.

The press launch had featured what IPOPHL held in store for the 1st Philippine International Copyright Summit (PICS) and what the copyright-based industries could anticipate during the week-long event.

With the theme “United in Copyright”, the 1st PICS will be the unifying platform to gather all authors/artists and various copyright-based industries (CBIs) as well as representatives from the government, private sector, non-profit organizations, and other stakeholders who share the same passion for literary, dramatic, musical, and artistic works.

The weeklong event aims to bring together representatives from the creative economy, groups, and relevant government organizations to teach the general public the value of copyright to this industry.

“Scaling up copyright appreciation in the country is very urgent today given that the creative economy was hit the hardest from this pandemic’s quarantine,” IPOPHL director-general Rowel Barba announced at the press launch of the event in a virtual conference.

According to a collective review conducted by the World Bank, the National Economic Development Authority, and the Department of Finance in July 2020 to evaluate the effects of COVID-19 on Philippine businesses, the arts, entertainment, and recreation sector witnessed the most business closures (82%) –– with 61% closing temporarily and 21% permanently due to the extended community quarantine.

Opening opportunities on the world stage

The PICS meeting is especially relevant this year since the United Nations has designated 2021 as the International Year of the Creative Economy, “a year for recovery and rebuilding stronger, with more inclusivity,” according to IPOPHL Deputy Director General (DDG) Nelson P. Laluces.

“Through this PICS, we seek to empower more artists to better secure their works while negotiating licensing agreements and exporting their works, particularly as we strive for global competitiveness. Finally, we hope that the summit will result in exceptional success stories that demonstrate how unique or copyrightable works are the foundation of a thriving creative industry,” Laluces stated.

The summit will highlight a variety of activities which include dialogues, business matching, online art exhibits, film and animation festivals, book fairs and launches, cultural presentations, and concerts, according to Emerson G. Cuyo, director of IPOPHL’s Bureau of Copyright and Related Rights (BCCR), the event’s lead organizer.

“The events will not take place solely in November. We’ve planned events leading up to the summit to help publicize the historic event,” Cuyo stated.
